8-year-old Wareham girl's book explores enchanted world of fairies

Last summer, Charlotte and Nellie went on an adventure that led them to a tea party, a sleepover, to flying school, and beyond.

Charlotte and Nellie are fairies, and they exist on the pages of a book called "Fairy Friends," which came from the imagination of 8-year-old Wareham resident Renee Monast and her friend, 13-year-old Chloe Van Dyne of New Hampshire.

"I've been wanting to write a book for awhile and I started and I never finished," Renee explained. Luckily, with the help of Chloe, this masterpiece came to fruition. "I know she likes fairies and I like fairies," says Renee in explaining why the pair wrote a book about fairies. "So… fairies!"

The self-published novel can be found at the Wareham Free Library, where children's librarian Marcia Hickey says she's thrilled to keep it.

"I thought they put a lot of great work into it," Hickey said of the book.

Renee's mother, Kristine, is equally proud.

"I think it's pretty awesome for her to write her own book at age 8," Kristine noted.

Renee says she was inspired by the "Rainbow Magic" books she frequently checks out from the library.

"Mrs. Hickey has all the fairy magic books," Renee notes. "They're my favorite books."

Renee says she came up with the idea for the book and Chloe, who visited for a week last summer, helped with the details.

"It's a really cool book," says Renee, a firm believer in magic.

"You know what makes me sad sometimes?" she asks. "When people say, 'I don't believe in fairies' and they say it to my face."

So what does Renee say? "Believe what you want to believe… but it's true."

Renee says she plans to write more books about the fairy friends. And, who knows, you may soon be able to catch them on the big screen.

"My friend wants to grow up to be a director," Renee says. "I was hoping he would do a movie for us."
