Aarne O. Ikkela, 90
Aarne O. Ikkela, 90, of Onset, died December 18, 2010 at Forestview Nursing Home, Wareham. He was the widower of the late Constance M. (Gorman) Ikkela and the son of the late Jack and Elsie (Siinkko) Ikkela.
He was born in Norwood and lived in Onset for over 50 years. He attended Norwood High School.
He served in the United States Army during WWII.
Mr. Ikkela worked as a Merchant Marine for many years, retiring as Captain of the Hess Mariner. After retiring, he served in civil service for the United States Coast Guard for 20 years and then worked at R.F. Morse in West Wareham.
He was a member of the Wareham Lodge of Elks # 1548. He was a talented musician having played the trumpet for several bands during the “Big Band” era.
Survivors include his daughter, Kristine E. Ikkela of Revere; 2 sons, Timothy A. Ikkela and Jack Ikkela both of Onset; 5 grandchildren, Gabrielle, Caleb, Eli, Theodore and Kassidy Ikkela; a nephew, Frank Bowman of Norwood.
His funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
