A.D. Makepeace farmers' market vendors remain optimistic, despite slow second week

Jun 24, 2015

The seven vendors at the A.D. Makepeace farmers’ market sweated it out beneath their tents, as they waited for customers on a slow Wednesday afternoon.

It was the second week the market was open, but the vendors noted a decrease in customers since last week, when the market first opened for the summer. But they weren’t discouraged, partially because of the new location in the Marriott hotel parking lot in Rosebrook Place, which Joanie Chipman, of cheese vendor Say Cheese, said increases the market’s visibility.

“With all the traffic going by, and all the offices and stuff, I'm sure it will pick up,” Chipman said. “People just have to get used to it again.”

The market had been located at Tihonet Village in previous years, which A.D. Makepeace Vice President of Marketing and Communication Linda Burke said was “a fairly remote location for someone dropping by.”

Scott Makowski, of Rochester’s Cervelli Farm, said the farm has come to the Makepeace market for the last few years. He agreed that the new location should lend itself to better visibility, and hopes it will encourage more vendors to come to the market.

“We’re hoping it will grow, year to year,” Makowski said.

The market has a total of 10 vendors, but Burke said they do not all show up to the market every week. The market is open on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. until September.
