Amber Filkins: 1,000 points later
With eight seconds left, down one point to the top team in the conference, the only thing standing between senior guard Amber Filkins and 1,000 career points was the free throw line.
With every eye in the gym focused on her, Filkins sank the free throw, leading to an overtime upset victory over Bourne and a career milestone she'll never forget.
"I looked calm, but I was so nervous," said Filkins, the first Lady Viking to reach 1,000 points since Alexis Silvia in the 2011-12 season. Filkins was mobbed by teammates after reaching 1,000, then again by family and friends after the team's dramatic 55-53 victory.
The crowd swelled in anticipation each time Filkins touched the ball late in the game, as she was two points shy of 1,000 for most of the fourth quarter. But with eight seconds remaining, Bourne had made a 12-0 run to take a 47-45 lead and both Filkins' milestone and a Wareham victory were in question.
Filkins approached the line with a chance to tie the game and step into the recordbooks.
"I have a lot of faith in myself with my free throws," said Filkins, who made five of six free throws in the fourth quarter. "It was a big relief to get it at the end like that."
"It took some serious courage to knock those down," said Wareham girls basketball coach Dave Brogioli.
“Amber deserves it. She’s worked hard for it,” said A.J. Filkins, Amber’s brother. “She’s come a long way... I’m just thinking about how far she has come since JBA and all that. The way she’s matured and gone about this whole process – it’s been awesome.”
Filkins went 0-7 from the field in the first half, and Brogioli briefly took her out of the game midway through the second quarter.
"I told her she was forcing it, and she knew she was pressing a bit," Brogioli said. "But she's a scorer, she's going to score her points."
Filkins, who finished with 12 points, has only been held to single digits once in the last two seasons. Eight of Filkins' 12 points came from the free throw line.
All told, 23 of Wareham's 55 points were on free throws, including the last four points of the game by Breanna Muir, making sure Filkins' milestone would not be bittersweet.
"We knew it would come down to the wire," Filkins said. "It was all about the win."
