The annual Cranberry Harvest Celebration will be held on Oct. 8 and 9 this year at Tihonet Village, and people will be able to put waders on and get into flooded cranberry bogs for the first time. Selfie sticks will be on hand for borrowing, of course.

A.D. Makepeace began the festival 13 years ago to welcome people onto the property and teach them about the harvest.

“It started as kind of an old fashioned small scale little festival and has grown over the past 13 years,” said Linda Burke, director of community relations for A.D. Makepeace. “We refer to ourselves as an Ocean Spray grower. We were one of the founders of Ocean Spray back in 1930 and the only company still operating that was one of the original founders.”

Burke estimated 30,000 from all over the world will come to the festival over the course of the weekend.

With more than 60 crafters of all kinds under a big tent and a farmer's market on the side of the pond, the festival offers attendees with more than just a view.

But if it's a view festival-goers want, they could go out on the water in a duck or swan paddleboat.

There will also be a food court featuring oysters, lobster rolls and more. The Wareham Historical Society will guide tours of the Fearing Tavern and Cape Cod Central Railroad will be on hand with a train engine, promoting their upcoming Buzzards Bay Polar Express.

Shuttle buses will run out to the bogs from Tihonet Village and, for the first time ever, from Tremont Nail. Viewing platforms will be set out on the bogs.

“You can see all the phases of harvesting. There's dry harvesting and there's wet harvesting," said Burke. "There are picking machines that look like oversized lawn mowers. In one spot, you can see all of that happening.”

Admission is $10, $5 for seniors, and children ages 7 and under are free. The event lasts both days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tihonet Village is located on 158 Tihonet Road.
