Attempted rape suspect denied bail
A convicted Level-3 sex offender who allegedly attempted to rape a Wareham woman in the Walmart parking lot on Sept. 24, was denied bail on Monday at a dangerousness hearing in Wareham District Court.
Lance Porter, 36, was arrested the night of the crime and charged with assault and battery, attempted kidnapping, and attempted rape in the incident.
Porter is on probation after spending 12 years in state prison for the rape of a 14-year old girl in Hanson in 1996. A judge ruled in December 2006 that Porter was not sexually dangerous, and Porter was subsequently released. After he was released, he moved into the Lake Shores neighborhood.
According to Wareham Police, they received several 911 phone calls around 10:15 p.m. on Friday, September 24, stating that there was a woman in the Walmart parking lot screaming and yelling for help.
Patrol officers located a 36-year old female who told police that she had just entered her vehicle after shopping at Walmart.
According to police, she noticed a male party standing outside of her vehicle who told her she had left some bags on the roof of her car.
She exited her vehicle and the male grabbed her and pushed her up against a van that was parked next to her car. She began to scream as loud as she could, and the male put his hand around her mouth and told her to "shut the [expletive] up." The victim told the officers that she then bit the male's hand, and she continued to scream wildly and tried to fight him off as he was dragging her toward his vehicle.
After biting the assailant's hand a second time, the victim was able to break away. She, as well as several witnesses, gave police a description of her assailant and the vehicle, along with a partial plate number, in which he left. Officers also viewed video footage from surveillance cameras at Wal Mart and Stop and Shop that recorded the incident.
After running the plates, police located the vehicle at Porter's home and arrested him.
The victim was not seriously injured and she was seeking her own medical treatment.
