Baby hawk returned to nest after 45-foot drop

Jun 6, 2022

The story of a baby red-shouldered hawk that fell from its nest in Marion on May 28 has a happy ending, thanks to efforts by local residents and a wildlife rehabilitation center.

A resident spotted the hawk on the ground, after it fell 45 feet. The young hawk, known as an eyas, was taken to Wild Care Cape Cod, a wildlife rehabilitation organization in Eastham.

Center staff examined the young hawk, which was treated for intestinal parasites. Otherwise, the bird was deemed in good health.

The young bird’s rescuer arranged with the Wareham-based Pontiac Tree Service, a division of Altura Tree Service Inc., to put the hawk chick back in its nest on June 2, where his rescuers hope it will remain safe until ready to fly off to new adventures.
