Baptiste out of School Committee race, leaves two uncontested seats

Mar 4, 2014

Wareham police officer and former school resource officer Karl Baptiste has withdrawn his name from the School Committee race, according to Town Clerk Mary Ann Silva.

Two three-year terms on the School Committee will be on the ballot in the April 1 town election. The two seats are currently filled by Cliff Sylvia and Ken Fontes.

Sylvia announced his bid for re-election at the Jan. 8 School Committee meeting.

“I just enjoy the work,” he said at the meeting. “We don’t always agree, but at least we disagree agreeably most of the time.”

Fontes elected not to run for re-election. Former Wareham High School teacher and administrator Mel Lazarus will be running unopposed for Fontes' open seat.

Baptiste could not immediately be reached for comment.

The last day to register to vote in the April 1 election is March 12. The contested races on the ballot include seats on the Board of Selectmen, Housing Authority and Board of Assessors.
