Basketball all-stars raise money for Boys & Girls Club

Although the high school basketball season is over, there is one more chance to catch the best local talent play together -- at the 22nd annual Boys & Girls Club Basketball Challenge on March 21 in New Bedford.

The evening will showcase boys and girls high school all-star teams as well as the seventh and eighth grade rising stars of the Boys & Girls Club. The high school all star girls game is at 7p.m. followed by the high school all star boys at 8p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and $2 for children.

All proceeds from the annual fund-raiser supports the programs and services offered by Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford/Wareham for nearly 1,000 registered members.

At 7 p.m. the high school all-star girls take the floor with New Bedford and South Coast Conference players challenging the all stars from Durfee, Westport, Old Colony League and Eastern Athletic Conference players.

The game will feature Kia Fernandes, Amber Filkins and Breanna Muir of Wareham along with Cassie White of New Bedford, Mariah Nichols of Fairhaven, Shelby Corsano and Chelsea Doucette of Bourne, Rileigh Avila, Nakira Examond, Mikayla Roderick and Iris Rivera of New Bedford Vocational, Kaleigh Goulart of Old Rochester, Kylie D’Ambrosio of Dighton Rehoboth and Kailyn Milligan of Apponequest.

On the other side the talents of Ashley Cadorette of Dartmouth High, will be joined by Amanda Holewiak of Somerset Berkley, Sophia Perez of Bridgewater Raynham, Maddie Jolin and Katie Nelson of Bishop Feehan, Brianna Camara, Jlynn Jackson and Paulina Feitelberg, Laura Johnson and Linsay Bumilla from Coyle Cassidy, Samantha Mederios of Westport and Allison Lake of Bishop Stang will take to the court just to name a few.

At 8 p.m. the all-star boys take the court led by Latroy Harrison and Mason Vasconcelles of Wareham, Jarred Reuter of Brewser Academy, Jaleal Massey and Quincy Pope of New Bedford, Tyree Weston of Cheshire Academy, Jacob Ashworth of Bourne, Nick Koneski of Dighton Rehoboth, Nick Portelance of New Bedford Vocational, Felipe Pires of Case and several other local talents.

They will tip off against Durfee/EAC/Westport league stars including: Bonzi Colson of St. Andrews, Joe Freiday of Bridgewater Raynham, Chris Farrington and Nick Salmon of Durfee, Chad Willard of Westport, John Goncalo of Bishop Connelly, Vaugn Browner of Somerset, Andrew Dessert and Desmond Johnson of Bishop Stang, Mike Nelson of Bishop Feehan, Anthony Mendoza of Coyle, Elijah Baptiste of Barnstable, Richie Hartnett of Westport and Kane Araujo of Martha’s Vineyard

The most valuable player from both the girls and boys teams will earn a $250 scholarship toward college. Every all-star will receive game t-shirts, a backpack and water bottles.

The evening will also feature big raffle with the opportunity to win golf for four with carts at Allendale Country Club, $250 gift certificate to Roland’s Tire, two box seats to a Boston Red Sox game and a luxury box for 10 at a Pawtucket Red Sox Game donated by Bristol County Savings Bank.

The evening of hoops action begins at 6 p.m. with the seventh and eighth grade rising stars of the Boys & Girls Club taking on the rising stars of Dartmouth. The Friday night event will be at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford, located at 166 Jenney St. and North Street in New Bedford. The event is presented by BayCoast Bank with supporting sponsorships from Stop & Shop and many other community minded businesses.
