Members of the Blue Star Mothers Eastern Massachusetts Chapter treated disabled veterans to dessert and a show on Thursday, reminding them that their sacrifice is not forgotten.

The group is dedicated to supporting mothers whose sons and daughters are serving in the armed forces or who have served. Recently, it started meeting in Wareham and is now extending a helping hand to other mothers and local veterans.

“We want mothers to have a comfortable place to go, and we want the veterans to know that we’re here for them,” said Wareham's Ilene Klaver, a Blue Star Mother.

Inside the Kendrick House on High Street, a handful of members served ice cream before the evening’s entertainment. Up first was a tap dance routine performed by Lisa Kenney and her granddaughter Alana.

Following the duo was Diana Anderson, a belly dancer from Harwich, who held the veterans’ attention with her sultry moves.

Klaver said the local chapter plans on becoming more active across the South Coast and Cape Cod. The goal, she said, is letting mothers know that they’re not alone when their children are deployed, or are back home and struggling with the effects of their service.

“We take care of our vets, our children, each other and our Gold Star families,” said Klaver, referring to families who have lost loved ones while serving.

Kendrick House resident John Pfingsten said their efforts were appreciated.

“I want the name of your organization so I can get a thank you card and have all the guys sign it,” Pfingsten told Klaver.

“You know what would be even better than that?” Klaver said. “A hug.”

Pfingsten happily obliged.
