Bookworm gives back big to Damien's Food Pantry
What began as an interest in the happenings at Damien's Food Pantry turned into a full-blown donation project to get local children to hit the books and for money to go toward those in need.
Wareham for Law and Democracy partnered with 9-year-old Will Boucher to create reading marathon for third and fourth graders. Will caught the attention of Dr. Carl Swanson of the organization as he was reading before a Damien's Food Pantry presentation.
From there, Swanson hatched an idea with Will in mind.
For each book read, $1 would be given to the food pantry, encouraging the students to hit the books for the month of January. When finished the bookworms would write a paragraph about the book they read and deliver it to the Wareham Free Library.
Within a week of the project beginning, two anonymous donors offered $500 each to go toward the food pantry. By the end of January, Will's efforts raked in $134, meaning 134 books were read by the students.
Swanson said he was "thrilled," to see the project not only come to life, but to end with a successful donation to the pantry.
"Will was really interested in what happens at the pantry," Swanson said.
With eight books under his belt, Will presented Executive Director of Damien's Food Pantry, Rachel Resendes with a bouquet of $100 bills Tuesday, Feb. 3. He said his favorite book he read was "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets."
Resendes congratulated Will on his achievements and thanked him for his work for the pantry. Damien's Food Pantry at 242 Marion Road is open 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and 7:30 to 11 a.m. on Thursdays and Saturdays.
