Bourne hands Wareham a season-ending 42-6 loss

The Wareham Vikings were hoping their final game of the 2010 season, against longtime rival Bourne, on Thanksgiving Day at Spillane Field could turn around one of the most frustrating and disappointing seasons in school history. After suffering several heartbreaking fourth-quarter losses during the regular season, the Vikings were determined to finish out the season with a win.
But the Bourne Canalmen, smarting from five straight losses to Wareham, burst out of the gate with three touchdowns in the first quarter to hand Wareham its worst loss since a 39-0 drubbing in 1943.
Bourne senior captain John Page took a handoff from senior quarterback Mike Taylor on the second play of the game and burst around Wareham's vulnerable left-defensive side for a 71-yard touchdown. He would follow that run minutes later with another 56-yard gallop around the same side for a second touchdown. Junior Joe Epps followed with a 6-yard run with :55 left in the first quarter to make the score 22-0. The Canalmen did not let up.
Bourne held a 42-0 lead deep into the fourth quarter, and it was up to sophomore Charles Tranfaglia to avoid a shutout. He answered the call, and not a few prayers of the Wareham frustrated faithful, by sprinting down the sidelines for a 35-yard touchdown with 4:41 left in the game to make the score 42-6.
The win was the first Thanksgiving Day win for Bourne since 2004, and it was only the team's 28th win in the 76-year rivalry. With the victory, Bourne improved its record under first-year coach John McIntyre to 6-5. The Wareham Vikings record fell to 1-10.
The loss marked the final game for thirteen Wareham seniors: Matt Pimental, Joe Santiago, Scott Gomes, David Gordon, Malhieek DePina, Tyler Pina, Marcus Gomes, Sean McCrillis, Chris Galavotti, Weston Watts, Zack Kowzic, Kevin Pesa, and Rhett Reed.
