The Bourne Wareham Art Association, a nonprofit, was organized in 1963 by a group of artists and art lovers in conjunction with the 50th anniversary celebration of the opening of the Cape Cod Canal. The purpose of the group is to promote the appreciation of fine arts in the canal area. The Association holds the an art show to benefit annual art achievement awards for local students planning to pursue a career in art.

One of the association’s founders, Clayton Fuller of Wareham, created the bronze statue “Aquene,” which depicts a native American maiden on the bluff at Onset. To honor Fuller, each year the art group presents a best in show award named after him.
