Buzzard's Bay Coalition applies for study grant
The Buzzards Bay Coalition is applying for a $200,000 grant from the Southeast New England Program (SNEP) to investigate the expanding the treatment capacity at the town’s Water Pollution Control Facility.
Director of Water Pollution Control Guy Campinha and Board of Sewer Commissioners members Chairman Marilyn J. Jordan and James Giberti submitted a request to the Board of Selectmen Tuesday night, asking them to send a required letter of support to SNEP, so that the coalition may be considered for the grant. The letter is due Sept. 15.
The Southeast New England Program, formed in 2014, is run by the Environmental Protection Agency, and aims to maintain and improve the habitats in the coastal watersheds of Cape Cod, Narragansett Bay, and Buzzards Bay.
The Board of Sewer Commissioners said in a letter to Korrin Petersen, Senior Attorney at the Buzzards Bay Coalition, that it “strongly supports and endorses the Buzzards Bay Coalition’s application to secure and act as Project Coordinator” for the grant.
The Board said the coalition would be working with Wareham, Bourne, Plymouth, and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy to determine the feasibility of expanding treatment capacity, collect a baseline water quality monitoring at Taylor’s Point, and complete a needs analysis for the expansion of municipal sewers in Wareham, Bourne, and Plymouth.
“Moving forward with future sewer expansion programs has been difficult … due to inherent capacity limitations of discharging into the Agawam River,” the Board’s letter read.
The Board said, with the grant, it would be able to involve other governmental agencies in the way the region handles wastewater management, and that the grant would allow the coalition to continue developing ways to reduce the amount of nitrogen pollution from local septic systems.
Selectmen voted unanimously to support the request.
