Buzzards Bay Coalition looking for Baywatchers
The Buzzards Bay Coalition is looking for volunteers to become Baywatchers in Wareham and the Buzzards Bay region. Baywatchers monitor the health of the water in their communities.
The Wareham waterways in need of Baywatchers are the Agawam River, Broadmarsh River, Onset Bay, Shell Point Bay and Weweantic River.
The Baywatchers program is the largest volunteer-based coastal monitoring effort in New England. Through the Baywatchers program, the Coalition monitors all of Buzzards Bay's major rivers, coves and harbors. The data collected through the Baywatchers program forms the foundation of the Coalition's efforts to restore and protect Buzzards Bay.
Baywatchers volunteer about once a week in the morning, from May to September, at their designated location. Baywatchers collect samples and measure salinity, temperature, water clarity and dissolved oxygen at the site. Baywatchers receive training prior to volunteering and do not need a science background.
To become a Baywatcher, contact Director of Monitoring Programs Tony Williams at 508-999-6363, ext. 203 or via e-mail at williams@savebuzzardsbay.org.
