Bystanders push burning truck away from Speedway Gas

A potentially devastating accident on Main Street was averted Monday morning when bystanders pushed a burning car away from the Speedway Gas station.

According to eyewitness Jerry Dean, a pickup truck parked next to a gas pump caught fire at around 10:50 a.m. The driver attempted to put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher before he and bystanders pushed the burning truck away from the pumps onto Main Street, said Dean.

Dean said firefighters were at the scene moments later.

“They were here in two seconds,” Dean said of the firefighters. “You’ve got to give them a lot of credit.”

Firefighters doused the flames and thick cloud of smoke enveloped the road in front of M&D’s Bait Shop. Wareham Police redirected traffic from Main Street to Merchants Way during the fire response.
