'Cabaret' coming to Buzzards Play

Oct 7, 2014

Buzzards Play Productions will transform into the Kit Kat Klub this month as it takes a step back in time to 1930s Berlin for the musical "Cabaret."

The theatre group will perform the highly-acclaimed 1998 Broadway revival of the musical starring Alan Cummings over the course of two weeks.

"We have some twists and takes on things I've never seen before in a 50-year play," said Jessica Wilson, director of the musical at Buzzards Play.

Wilson said the theatre group tries to pick shows that are well-known and haven't been performed locally in recent years. She said when the opportunity to direct "Cabaret" arose, she took it because she loves the show.

Cabaret was first performed as a musical on Broadway in 1966. It is set in 1931 Berlin during the rise of the Nazi Party. The show revolves around the nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub and the relationship between the star of the Klub, 19-year-old British singer Sally Bowles, and an American writer, Cliff Bradshaw.

"We're aiming for a completely immersive theatre experience," Wilson said. "When you walk in the door, it will feel like the Kit Kat Club in 1930s Berlin."

Wilson said the talent in the area is incredible and the show has attracted performers from as far as Hyannis and Orleans.

"With musicals, you have to prove that you can act, sing and dance," she said.

That was certainly no problem for Caitlin Backholm, 23, who has been dancing at the Falmouth Dance Academy for 21 years. She'll choreograph the show for Buzzards Play, and will also play the lead role of Sally.

"I've been dreaming of playing her since I was a little girl," she said.

Backholm came to Buzzards Play two years ago when her friend put on a play called "Pirate, Captain, Flint, Steel."

"I've never felt so welcomed at a theatre before," she said.

She also performed in the theatre's most recent performance, "The Pajama Game."

Her singing partner in that show was Kevin Kenneally from Yarmouth, who will also be playing Cliff in "Cabaret."

"It's a role I've always wanted to play," he said. "It's by far the most emotionally powerful role I have played."

"Audiences who are familiar with it will be blown away with what we're doing," he said. To those who haven't seen it before, he said, "Come see it and you wont be disappointed."

Wilson said that putting on a play at a community theatre is a labor of love, but one certainly worth doing.

"It's a challenge but exciting to know you're bringing something real to life."

"Cabaret" will play at Buzzards Play Productions, located at 3065 Cranberry Highway, on Oct, 9, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25. Show times are either 2 or 8 p.m., with two shows running some days. Table seating, which includes Kit Kat Klub servers catering to you before and during the show, is $22 while general seating is $18.
