A calming and Celtic holiday concert
While box-store patrons likely heard Mariah Carey’s “All I want for Christmas is You” once again, concert-goers at the Wareham Free Library heard a different variety of seasonal tune from a performance by an authentic Celtic harpist.
Aine Minogue is a Celtic harpist and singer born in Ireland but has since moved to New England. Her performance titled "To Warm a Winter's Night" at the library took place Monday, Dec. 9 to celebrate the holidays, especially the winter solstice. According to her website, she has always loved Irish folk music but her performances feature the music of her homeland with a modern twist.
Director of the Library Patrick Marshall explained Minogue has performed at the library for a few years now and it has become an annual tradition. Marshall said giving the community a different way to celebrate was one of his main goals for the event.
During her performance, Minogue talked about Irish history, her own experience growing up in Ireland and how it relates to the music.
85 people from the community came out to see Minogue perform and many of those in attendance described her as "magical" and "ethereal."
Jeffry Burrows attended the concert with his wife Millie and he said he found Minogue’s description of Irish history interesting and described the performance as "a wonderful change of pace."
"It's different than a rock concert because of the harp's calming effect," said Jeffry Burrows. "You can really focus on the music and your body physically reacts differently."
Heather Longden of Onset, but originally from England, also attended the concert because she said had heard good things about Minogue's performance.
"It was such a fabulous sound the way her voice and the harp combine, it was really quite magical," said Killgallen. "
