Calvin Hitchcock, 93

WAREHAM- Calvin Hitchcock, 93, of Wareham died April 17, 2023 at Southwood Nursing Home in Norwell. He was the husband of the late Margaret A. “Peggy”(Adams) Hitchcock, they were married on June 28, 1952. He was the son of the late William N. Hitchcock and Lydia Lincoln (Ellis) Hitchcock.

He was born in Wareham and lived there most of his life.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1952 and attended service schools in Radar Operation and Combat Information Center. He was assigned to Destroyer U.S.S. Putnam DD-757 for one year and then on a carrier, U.S.S. Batran CVL-29 from 1950 to 1952 participating in the war in Korea.

Calvin graduated from Bristol Community College in 1974 with an associate degree in Fire Science Technology with highest honors.

He worked for the Department of Defense, U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1982 as a civilian starting as firefighter, crew chief for 12 years, assistant chief in charge of Fire Prevention for 5 years, and Fire Chief for 10 years. He was Assistant Fire Chief for Wareham Forest Fire Out-of District. Calvin retired in February 1982.

Calvin is survived by his loving sister, Barbara Haley of Rumford, ME; nephews Joseph April and his wife Judy and James April and his wife Deborah.

His funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 24, 2023 at the First Congregational Church, 11 Gibbs Ave., Wareham.

Burial will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
