Candidates submit papers to establish field

Feb 14, 2010

The deadline for returning nomination papers passed on Wednesday, Feb. 17, establishing the field of candidates for the April 6 election.

Six candidates are running for two open seats on the Board of Selectmen. Incumbents John P. Cronan and Chair Bruce Sauvageau will be defending their seats against newcomers Brock Tucy and Stephen Holmes; Cara A. Winslow, who last year ran for the seat now held by Walter Cruz; and Frank DeFelice, who ran for a position on the board in 2008.

Melodye Conway will challenge Town Clerk Mary Ann Silva's bid for reelection. The term is for three years, and Silva has held the position since 1988.

Claire Smith will challenge incumbent John Donahue for a three-year term as Town Moderator.

Lynne Burroughs and Rhonda Veugen are vying for a three-year term on the School Committee.  Chairman Robert L. Brousseau is not seeking reelection after serving on the committee for 15 years. Burroughs ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the board last year.

Patricia Harju Zimmer is running unopposed for a three-year position on the Housing Authority. Selectmen recently appointed her to fill out an unexpired term on the board.   Donald Hall will be running unopposed for reelection to a five-year term on the board.

Mary Ann D. Morse of Agawam Drive will run unopposed for a three-year term as assessor.  The position is currently held by Robert J. Barry.

The races may still change.  There is always the possibility of a write-in campaign, and nomination papers are not certified until March 5.  Candidates have until that date to withdraw from the race, and objections to a candidacy  may be made until that time.
