Cape Cod Novelties brings bejeweled flair to Onset Village
Adding accessories to your winter wardrobe can put some sparkle in the snowy days, and the owner of a new Onset shop hopes to do that without breaking the bank.
Cape Cod Novelties owner Rich Butler has sold jewelry for six years at a Dennis flea market, and the Wareham resident recently set up shop in Onset Village.
Located on West Central Avenue, adjacent to Dudley Brown Square, Cape Cod Novelties sells jewelry, scarves, hats, and other accessories.
While the retail space is small, the selection is eclectic. Butler says he buys his product straight from a factory so he can sell it for lower, wholesale prices. There are brand names such as New York and Co., as well as Cape Cod beads and bracelets. Customers can make their own beaded, silver-plated bracelets for $20.
Butler worked in construction for 30 years before seeking alternate business ventures in the wake of the burst of the housing bubble.
“I had 20 guys working under me at one point,” he said, adding that he watched other people struggle as work dried up. “Even guys that only had four or five employees, it affected them too.”
Butler says that he wants to see how things go at his current location, and if all goes well, he'll look for a larger space in the Onset and Wareham area.
He said he is keeping in mind that Onset is a busy place in the summer, but not so much in the colder months, and he wants to hang around through the summer season.
With a larger space, he says, he’ll be able to display a larger selection.
“I’m going to give it about eight months and see what happens,” Butler said, adding that so far, “I’ve done better than I thought I would.”
