Carl Wakefield, Sr., 87
Carl D. Wakefield, Sr., 87, of West Wareham passed away Jan. 29 surrounded by his family at Royal Cape Cod Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Buzzards Bay after a long illness. He was the husband of Pamela L. Wakefield who passed away just two days prior on Jan. 27. They were married for 58 years.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Laurence and Ruby (Bolles) Wakefield. After graduating high school, he attended Hartford College and Lee Institute.
He worked for the Kattden-Neisner Group in Hartford, a national chain of retailers and was promoted to vice-president of sales and development northeast region. Returning to Wareham, Carl founded a chain of sandwich shops and “Carbo’s Restaurant” in Wareham. Along with his wife, he ran the business until 1983 when they sold the sandwich shop chain to D’Angelo’s and the restaurant to others.
Carl served on many town boards and committees including the Board of Appeals and the Board of Health in Wareham where he also served as health agent for 20 years, retiring in 2003. After his retirement, he worked with his daughter Valerie and her husband Marc founding the occupational health and safety consulting and training firm known as United Alliance Services Corporation.
He was a member of the Wareham-New Bedford Lodge of Elks and a charter member of the Wareham Lions Club. He loved classical music, playing the clarinet, and especially enjoyed his cabin cruiser, “Spin Drift.”
In his retirement years, Carl, fondly known as “Grampie” to many, enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his daughter, Valerie W. Bianco and her husband Marc of W. Wareham; his sons, Steven C. Wakefield and his wife Vivienne of Mt. Vernon, New York and David M. Wakefield and his wife Janet of Onset; his brother, John Crawford of Liberty, Utah; his grandchildren, Jordan M. Wakefield, Alexander M. Bianco and Benjamin C. Bianco. He is also survived by his “other daughter,” Leanne M. Hunt, of Wareham, her husband Robert and their sons, Hayden and Harrison Hunt, and many devoted nieces and nephews. Carl was predeceased by his sons, the late CPL. Carl D. Wakefield, Jr., USMC and the late Brian K. Wakefield and his brother Lewis Eaton.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in Agawam Cemetery, Wareham. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m prior to the service.
