Catherine F. (Fisher) Cook, 81

Jan 21, 2015

Catherine F. (Fisher) Cook, 81, of Onset died Jan. 18 in the Charlton Memorial Hospital, Fall River. She was the widow of the late James A. Cook, Jr. and the daughter of the late Myron C. and Katherine B. (Schaefer) Fisher.

She was born in Somerville and spent her summers in Onset, moving there permanently in 1994 after living in Barberton, Ohio and Benicia, California. She graduated from Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, and earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in Education from Akron University in Akron, Ohio.

While raising five children, she worked as a substitute teacher. She later traveled to all seven continents with her husband, Jim, circumnavigating the world aboard the ocean liner Saga Rose and crossing the Drake Passage to Antarctica in 2002. She was very much a family woman, often traveling great distances to visit her loved ones.

Mrs. Cook was an Elder in the Community of Christ Church, serving as a Trustee and Past President of the Community of Christ Campgrounds in Onset. She planned the community’s church services for many years, playing the organ and piano, and regularly including her favorite hymns in the program, such as “The Old, Old Path” and “As The Deer”.

Mrs. Cook helped nurture the local arts community, serving as President of the Onset Creative Arts Association and supporting the work of local artists and musicians. Her home brimmed with boxes, ribbons, wire, and floral foam, as well as figurines of angels, in which she held an abiding belief. Her frank generosity and open-door policy brought a steady stream of visitors to her living room, where she was happy to share a sweet morsel, display a vase of fresh flowers, discuss local gossip, and boast about her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Michael A. Cook and his wife Deborah of Onset, James A. Cook, III and his wife Mariella of Mooresville, North Carolina, Lisa K. Houk and her husband Paul of Montgomery, Alabama, Julie E. Einhellig and her husband Robert of Littleton, Colorado and Sarah J. Bergman and her husband Bruno of New Albany, Ohio; a sister, Carolyn Pratt and her husband Ralph of Independence, Missouri; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Her memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 24 at the Youth Chapel, Onset Campgrounds.

Donations in her memory may be made to Onset Board of Trustees – Fund for Elder Care.
