Celebrating and remembering No. 15
The winner of an extra-innings game was determined by a coin toss, revealing that the glory of victory was not foremost on players' minds at Spillane Field last Saturday.
Rather, the second-annual Joseph X. Vasconceles Baseball Tournament was held to remember and raise money in to support a scholarship fund and recognize those who, like the tournament's namesake, "Joey," who was killed in a car accident in 2009, love the game of baseball.
"It went very well," reported Joey's great-aunt Roseann DeGrenier. "We had a much larger turnout than last year - double the spectators, more ballplayers - and great baseball."
The event brought together friends, family-members, and teammates of Joey, all wearing tee-shirts with his high school number, 15, emblazoned on the back. In addition to a tournament among four teams and a home-run derby on the field, spectators enjoyed a Moonwalk, and friends sold hot dogs and hamburgers and raffle tickets for over 40 items as they wandered through the stands.
Two Little League players were also named by the program's coaches as the previous season's Joseph X. Vasconceles "Player(s) of the Year." Brandon Zine received the honor for the Major League, and Brian Miller was given the award for the Minor League.
"People were more than generous," said DeGrenier. "It was heartwarming and really wonderful."
Even if you missed the event, donations to the scholarship fund are accepted year-round. If interested, you can send checks made out to the Joseph X. Vasconceles Scholarship Fund, c/o Roseann DeGrenier, 2667 Cranberry Highway, Wareham 02571.
