Charge Pond Road bridge inspection to alter traffic

Jan 6, 2024

Everyday until Jan. 9, from the hours of 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., traffic on Route 25 will be affected while an inspection is completed of the Charge Pond Road bridge, according to a municipality work notification on the town’s website.

Police detail will be present to assist. According to the notification, there will be “various traffic alterations on each bound of Route 25 by closing the shoulders and one lane alternating (Left or Right.)”

A minimum of one lane will be maintained at all times on each bound for traffic. The dates for this inspection may be affected in the event of inclement weather.

This inspection comes as a part of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s plan to make repairs to preserve bridges in a project known as the “District 5 Bridge Bundle.”

In April 2023, a hearing was held to present the status of the project and receive community feedback. According to the presentation, Lakeville, Mansfield, Duxbury and Plymouth bridges are also included in this project.

A number of “deficiencies” were detected for the five bridges, including declining condition of bridge decks and substructures, failing paint systems, corroding steel, failing bearings and joints as well as substandard guardrails and approach barrier, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

The Charge Pond Road bridge, which was built in 1967, will have its decks replaced; a cleaning, painting and repairing to the structural steel; repairs to the existing bridge substructures; replacement of bearings and joins; construction of new crash-tested bridge barriers as well as reconstruction of the approach roadway to provide “seamless transitions,” according to the presentation.

The timeline shared for this project states the department intends to begin construction this summer, with the total allotted construction time being three years.

It is unclear whether this initial plan has changed. The Department of Transportation has not yet responded to requests for comment.
