For 30 years, the Wareham High School Chess team has been competing with area high schools. That's 30 years since Jeff Dunn, a math teacher at Wareham High, formed the team in 1984.

When continuing the tradition was briefly in question after budget cuts last year eliminated any money for transportation to out-of-town games, G.H. Dunn Insurance Agency rode the rescue with a corporate sponsorship.

David Dunn, president of the company and cousin of Jeff, offered up a $250 company contribution and procured a matching grant from Quincy-based Arbella Insurance Company.

This year, Dunn Insurance donated $300 and Arbella has doubled this amount with a matching gift donation of $600 in honor of Arbella’s 25th annivesary.

Jeff Dunn said that, without the help of Dunn Insurance and Arbella, there would be no chess team. He and the team are grateful.

Chess Team co-captain and senior Rachel Avila said she hopes to continue to play chess in college and teach the game to others.

“I really enjoy the competition. It’s a great feeling when you plan an attack and it works!" she said. "I am glad that we got a chance to compete this year.”
