Church of the Good Shepherd welcomes new pastor
Pastor Dan Bernier is settling into his new job as Rector of Church of the Good Shepherd on High Street.
"It's a strong community with good people," he said was his first impression of the town. Since he began on December 1, Pastor Dan has been working towards building stronger community ties in Wareham.
"I sense there is some brokenness in the community," he stated. "But I feel the parish can be a place of support and acceptance."
Unconditional acceptance is key for Pastor Dan. Like Jesus, he said, it is important to provide a welcoming atmosphere through compassion and neighborhood outreach, like the Shepherd's Table free meals and food pantry services the church already offers.
Good Shepherd's long history of giving back is what Pastor Dan said drew him to Wareham and to the Episcopalian faith. He began his career as a Roman Catholic priest, but converted five years ago. He was a part-time pastor at Christ Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, New Hampshire before taking his new full-time position. ]
Pastor Dan said he is "excited" to answer God's call here in Wareham.
"The church community will play a vital role in the Wareham community," he noted. "So we have to do everything we can to make people feel welcomed."
Pastor Dan's unique style of delivering service is one way he is trying to accomplish that. He likes to add an interactive element to his sermons. He often doesn't use notes or texts, but prefers to begin with the help of the parishioners.
"I like to ask questions," he explained. "I don't preach at, it's about moving into people's lives."
