Churches provide places to sleep during winter months

Dec 31, 2010

For the third winter, the Wareham Clergy Association is sponsoring Nights of Hospitality, and opening church doors to anyone in need of a meal and warm place to sleep.

Men, women, and families - whether homeless or just without heat - are welcome to visit the participating churches during designated weeks nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Nights of Hospitality runs until March 19.

Attendees must stay for the entire night and cannot receive visitors or bring drugs or alcohol. Evening and morning meals are provided.

Anyone in need of a ride to the evening's participating church can stop by the train station on Merchants Way in downtown Wareham from 6:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Wareham Police will provide transportation to the church and a ride back to Merchants Way the following morning.

Five churches, up from four last year, are participating in the program, which reduces the number of weeks each church has to host the program, which is helping to lessen the burden on the churches, said The Rev. Colon Wright, of the Emmanuel Assembly of God in Onset. Volunteers prepare the meals and stay overnight with attendees.

The participating churches are: Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene, First Congregational Church, Church of the Good Shepherd, Emmanuel Assembly of God, and Heaven's Gate Christian Church.

Another helping hand for the churches came from Turning Point this year. The churches have received food and bedding from the organization.
