Clayton Fuller, 97
Clayton Fuller, 97, of East Wareham, passed away on Saturday, May 24, in St. Lukes Hospital. He was the Husband of the late Mary (Bunch) Fuller for 49 years.
Born in St. Augustine, Fla., he grew up in Miami and in Long Beach, N.Y. He moved to Wareham in 1937. In 1945 he and his brother Charles established Fuller Brothers Boat and Equipment Company on Route 6-28 in Wareham and operated business successfully for 26 years.
Fuller was twice elected selectman of the Town of Wareham serving from 1982 to 1985. He served on the Wareham Zoning Board of Appeals for almost 10 years, five of them as chairman, and wrote the landmark decision in the Volpe Case, which helped to save marshland throughout the Commonwealth. In 1991, Fuller was awarded the Wareham Kiwanis Club’s Public Service Award and Citizen of the Year Award.
Fuller was an artist whose works include those given to Wareham schools and several public sculptures. His bronze Native American woman overlooks Onset Harbor. His Korean War Memorial sculpture is located in the Capitol in Hartford, CT. he was a member of the Bourne-Wareham Art Association, the Falmouth Artists Guild, Printmakers of Cape Cod and the advisory board of the Committee to Encourage Public Art in Falmouth. His paintings and sculptures are in many private collections.
Fuller is the ninth generation of his family in America, his American ancestor having been Thomas Fuller who came to Salem Village in 1638.
Fuller is survived by his daughters Virginia Hodson of Bixby, Okla., and Priscilla Bradley and her husband Charles of Marion; four granddaughters, Tracy Lewandowski and her husband David of Kansas City, Mo., Elizabeth Gustin and her husband Mark of East Moriches, N.Y., Elaine Love and her husband Kenneth of West Linn, Ore., and Faith Piazza and her husband Stevan of Fairhaven; one grandson John Hodson and his wife Laurence Walsh-Hodson of Montrose, Calif.; and three great-grandchildren, Joseph and James Love and Jacqueline Piazza; and his dearest friend Arlene Hecht of Newton.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, May 30 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home 2599 Cranberry Hwy (Rt. 28), Wareham.
