Wareham resident Brice Fernandes is a family friend. Hasani Pilgrim, Angie Kight, Amanda Austin, and Peter Brousseau all went to Wareham High School with Scotty. Ryan Powdrell came because his wife "speaks highly of Scotty." Ray Tolliver came as a supporter along with friend Powdrell.

More than 120 family members, friends, and supporters came out under the bright sun and summer-like weather on Saturday, May 19, for the third Annual Scotty Monteiro Jr. Foundation Golf Tournament and fundraiser held at the Bay Pointe Club in Onset.

Scotty Monteiro Jr. was murdered on September 5, 2009. The Scotty Monteiro Jr. Foundation, also called "Stop the Violence," was formed after his death to prevent anyone else from going through a similar tragedy, said Wendy Monteiro, co-founder of the foundation and Scotty Monteiro's aunt.

The Foundation seeks to educate, increase awareness, and support Wareham's youth in order to "Stop The Violence." All the proceeds from the golf tournament go to anti-violence programs in the schools and the community, Monteiro said.

"It's good, we have a ton of good kids, but there are a ton of kids that are hurting, and anyone willing to help with that is a good thing," said East Wareham resident and family friend Quin Couture. "We don't have enough foundations in Wareham."

Tournament players milled about the Bay Point Clubhouse or on the course green talking amongst each other as they waited for the early afternoon tee-off to begin. Volunteers wore T-shirts emblazoned with the Scotty Monteiro signature, a cursive "SM," as they registered participants.

"You see that logo all over the place," said Brice Fernandes, whose daughter was "best friends" with Scotty Monteiro's girlfriend and who remembers Scotty visiting his house often. "It's not going away, which is great. To see the foundation have a nice tournament like this, and to see them stay with it, it's good that they still have the energy and stay active."

Dinner and dancing was scheduled to followed the golfing.

"It's a good time, it's a good event, it's for a really good cause, and the Monteiros are all good friends of mine," said Couture. "Anyone coming in with a positive influence to help out this town is a good thing."

Wareham Village Soup will update this story with the total amount fundraised when it becomes available.
