Community Health Center comes to Wareham
A new location of the Greater New Bedford Community Health Center is set to open in Wareham on Sept. 1.
A private, non-profit healthcare provider, the Community Health Center is designed to give care to the low-income, underserved population of Wareham.
"We've never turned someone away because they can't pay," said Peter Georgeopoulos, CEO of the Greater New Bedford Community Health Center.
Georgeopoulos said the new center, set to open in the Shaw's parking lot at 127 Marion Road – the former location of Browne's Liquors – will likely serve 3,100 to 3,200 different people a year, totaling 13,000 to 14,000 visits a year.
According to Georgeopoulos, the Community Health Center will offer primary and urgent care for all ages. He said there will be one medical doctor on staff, two nurse practitioners, and about 18 full-time medical staff, in total.
"We're really excited about it," Georgeopoulos said. "Everyone I meet is happy this is happening."
The Greater New Bedford Community Health Center has been in operation since 1981. Georgeopoulos said he planned on expanding to Wareham, after studying the demographics of the town and seeing there was a need for this type of service.
After receiving a federal grant for the project, Georgeopoulos had 120 days to build the new location, which will hold its grand opening on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
"We're not looking to make money, just help the community," Georgeopoulos said. "We're going to do a good job in Wareham."
