Resident Eleanor Martin was sworn into office Tuesday morning as an appointed member of the Wareham Housing Authority.

"I've always been active in the community and when Bob spoke to me, I thought, 'this is something I can do,'" said Martin.

"I think it will be a positive improvement on the community and Housing Authority because she has a lot of local community experience," said Housing Authority Chair Bob Powilatis. "She knows about the town and its people."

Martin has served on the Onset Bay Association in several roles including treasurer, she is a part of the Friends of the Wareham Veterans Council Committee, and will soon be involved with the Church of the Good Shepherd.

Martin said she felt confident about making an impact.

"I'm sure I'll be able to help," she said

Nominated by State Representative Susan Williams Gifford (R-Wareham), Martin is filling a state-appointed position appointed by the governor.

Present at her Oath of Office were Gifford, Selectman Alan Slavin and Housing Authority member Bill Lockwood.

The Wareham Housing Authority is state-run. It manages and oversees 104 state-subsidized housing units for elderly tenants. It also manages 50 Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program units. It is governed by a five-member board of commissioners, four of which are elected by the citizens of Wareham and the fifth is a state appointee.
