Competency hearing for robbery suspect continued to May 9

Apr 25, 2013

Nicholas Liadis, who is accused of committing two armed bank robberies, including one at Eastern Bank in Wareham, will be in Wareham District Court for a competency hearing on May 9.

Liadis, 35, of Carver, was indicted by a grand jury April 12 on two counts of armed robbery in Plymouth County Superior Court in Brockton, according to the clerk's office in Brockton.

Liadis is accused of robbing Eastern Bank on Main Street in February, as well as the Taunton Federal Credit Union in Middleborough in November, 2012.

During a bail hearing in Wareham on March 25, following a 20-day evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital,  Liadis' attorney, Matt Walsh, said that his client has an I.Q. below 70 and was "prompted and coached to commit these crimes by a convicted felon."

If Liadis is found competent to stand trial, he faces up to ten years in prison — five years for each count of armed robbery.

The competency hearing was originally scheduled for May 2, but was continued at the request of Assistant District Attorney Mary Nguyen, because Liadis is scheduled to be arraigned on the armed robbery charges in Plymouth County Superior Court in Brockton on May 2, following his indictment there.

According to his attorney, Liadis was evaluated by the Carver Public Schools at age 16, and was found to be operating with the mental capacity of somebody between seven and eight years old.

Another evaluation at age 30 concluded that Liadis' I.Q. is below 70.

His father, George Liadis, addressed the court in March, saying that the family has unsuccessfully attempted to place Nicholas under guardianship several times.

Liadis was released on $5,000 bail into the custody of his father after the March 25 bail hearing. He was placed under house arrest and mandated to wear a GPS monitoring device.

Police arrested Liadis on Feb. 28, the evening of the Eastern Bank robbery, while he was working at Cox Corner Pizza in Duxbury. Liadis told Duxbury Police that the stolen money was in the trunk of his car, according to court documents.

Wareham Police obtained a warrant to search the car the following morning, and found stolen cash and the clothing and sunglasses police say he wore when he allegedly robbed Eastern Bank, according to court documents.
