Cory Drive and Damien Drive avoid a bump in the road

Following some minor disputes between Board members about Wareham's street acceptance request process, the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday voted to advance street acceptance requests for Cory Drive and Damien Drive

Cory Drive and Damien Drive are two private streets located near the junction of Great Neck Road and Dowd Avenue in East Wareham. Currently, maintenance, upkeep, and snow removal of Cory Drive and Damien Drive are handled by the developer. The town's resources are not put towards the two roads. If the street acceptance request advances past the Planning Board, the town would still need to vote to make the streets official.

About 20 residents of Cory Drive and Damien Drive attended the Selectmen meeting in support of the applicant, Lee Castignetti, the neighborhood's developer. Castignetti shared plans with the Board showing the perimeters of the area. However, the Board deemed the plans insufficient, telling Castignetti they would need to see the As-Built, which is a codified, measured drawing of the area prepared by a contractor.

Castignetti said he is unfamiliar with the process, and told the Board he sent the As-Built on to the Planning Board instead. Selectman Alan Slavin added that the As-Built should have also needed to be on file at the Town Clerk's office prior to coming before the Board.

Selectman Judy Whiteside said she wanted the process to be followed properly, because she doesn't "ever want to see a road that is not up to snuff brought before any [town] body."

"I'm not saying your road is not up to snuff, but this town over the years, has not really done what it should have done,” Whiteside said.

"I can agree with Selectman Whiteside in a technical sense," Selectman Peter Teitelbaum said. "However, it seems to me that this is an internal policy that we should adopt—which is that no hearing is even scheduled until an As-Built is in hand.”

Chairman Patrick Tropeano recommended to move it along to the Planning Board with the condition that the As-Built be sent to the Town Clerk's office and dropped off as the Selectman's office as well. Following agreement of these stipulations, the Board voted unanimously to forward the requests on to the Planning Board.
