Council on Aging plans February events

The Council on Aging has plenty of events planned throughout the month. 

If schools are closed due to the weather, the Council on Aging will be closed, too. Unless otherwise noted, all activities take place at the Multiservice Center at 28 Marion Rd. and require registration by calling 508-291-3130.

On February 4, learn how to acrylic paint from 10 a.m. to noon. Students will leave the class with a finished work of art. Materials are included in the $15 fee. Registration required.

On February 4, discuss current events. Judith Grassi will lead a group discussion of current events at the local, national, and international scale. The COA hopes to continue holding discussions monthly. Registration required.

On February 8 at 1 p.m., Barbara Pelletier will lead a craft class, as she does each month. Registration is required and a $2 donation is requested. 

The Wednesday Walking Group will meet at the YMCA at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 9 and 23. Weather permitting, the group meets at the Middle School track. The group is led by Deborah Sandoli, a retired international walking and running coach, wellness nurse and psychologist. Registration required.

Garden Therapy will be held at 10:30 a.m. on February 11. Create a garden arrangement, with guidance and materials provided by the Wareham Garden Club. Registration required. 

The Council on Aging will be hosting a Valentine Lunch at 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 16. The menu includes baked ziti, meatballs, sauce and a garlic roll, with chocolate fudge cake for dessert. Make reservations the week before by calling Cheryl at 508-291-3100, ext. 6514. A donation of $2.50 is suggested and appreciated.

On February 23, enjoy a bbq pulled pork lunch at 11:30 a.m. and bingo at 12:30. Bingo is cash only and cards cost 50 cents apiece. 

The Advocates for Wareham Seniors will be raffling off a personal tablet during the month of February, with tickets costing $1 each or 8 for $5.

On Feb. 23, learn to make greeting cards at 9:15 a.m. Registration is required. A $3 donation is requested, and attendees will complete four to five cards.

On Feb. 25, the Greater Boston Food Bank will deliver food for those who signed up between 9 and 10 a.m. Call for more information. 

A four-week acrylic painting class for beginners will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays, starting March 9. The fee is $40 and includes all materials. Register early.

Regular activities will continue: 

On Mondays, play cribbage from 10 a.m. to noon in Room 208. From 9 to 10 a.m., take a circuit exercise class with Marge Blinstrub temporarily at the Wareham Free Library. No registration is required. Pay $3 at the door.

Knitters — advanced and beginners — are invited to come together to work on projects on Mondays at 10 a.m. Call 508-291-3130 to sign up.

On Tuesdays, join seniors for coffee and conversation from 9 to 10 a.m. in the Cranberry Cafe. Play Mahjong starting at 1 p.m. in the Cranberry Cafe.

At the Multiservice Center on Tuesdays, play chair volleyball at 10 a.m. or practice Tai Chi at 1:30 p.m.

On Wednesdays at 1 p.m., learn to make mats for the homeless in Room 102. 

On Thursdays, Chair Yoga with Pam meets at 2 p.m. Registration is required.

On Fridays, learn country line dancing at the Wareham Free Library with Marge Blinstrub from 9 to 10 a.m. No registration is required. Pay $3 at the door.

Grab and Go Lunches continue Tuesdays and Thursdays. Pick up the free lunches courtesy of the Old Colony Elder Services at the Multi-Service Center handicap ramp between 9 and 9:30 a.m. Lunches must be reserved at least three days ahead of the scheduled delivery date by calling 508-291-3130. Senior Tax Work-Off Program forms are available in the COA Office.

Preventative Dental Services returns offering cleanings, exams, oral cancer screenings, and denture care. Services are covered by Mass Health Standard and affordable rates offered for individuals without dental insurance. Appointments made or questions answered at 508-827-6725.
