Courthouse evacuated due to noxious odor

Wareham District Court was evacuated Wednesday morning when a foul odor permeated the building, leaving people feeling nauseated, lightheaded, and dizzy.

The odor reportedly came from cleaning products that were poured down a drain. The building was ventilated and will remained closed for the day.

According to Wareham Fire Chief Robert McDuffy, an employee in the clerk’s office called the Board of Health, who in-turn called the fire department and the Department of Environmental Protection. A Haz-Mat team also responded to the scene.

“The normal response is to evacuate the building,” said McDuffy.

One potential difficulty of evacuating a courthouse is transporting people who are in lock-up, but officers at the scene said that there had been no problems.

Despite complaints of feeling sick, everyone evacuated refused medical treatment. McDuffy observed that people who had felt ill began feeling better as soon as they were out of the building and into the fresh air.
