Cruising for Curtis

Aug 25, 2010

Dozens of motorcyclists completed a run from Main Street in Wareham to Rochester and Middleboro Sunday afternoon before making a grand entrance at the Dudley L. Brown VFW in Onset, all to raise funds for 14-year-old Wareham resident Curtis Grace, who is battling leukemia.

The "Curtis vs. Cancer" motorcycle run, along with a fundraiser held at the VFW featuring games and raffles, raised approximately $7,000 for Curtis' family. It was organized by the Bristol County Ruff Ryders, a club for motorcycle, car, and truck enthusiasts, which gives back to the surrounding communities and people in need through various avenues.

The soggy weather didn't discourage Ruff Ryders and other motorcyclists from Revere down to Rhode Island from participating.

"Cancer will kill you, but the rain won't," said Randy Delgado, a coordinator of the event. He said the Ruff Ryders decided to help Curtis after hearing about him from fellow Ruff Ryder Shannon Sylvia, who coached Curtis in basketball.

Curtis donned a big smile as he checked out the long line of motorcycles parked at the VFW. "I thank them a lot," he said. "I really appreciate their kindness."

Curtis was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in January and had a bone marrow transplant in April. He is currently on medication so his body will not reject the new bone marrow, and his immune system is compromised, said his mother, Kim. He is doing well, but "it's still a long road ahead," she said.

The funds raised will go toward the installation of air purification and central air conditioning in the family's home, which will help Curtis stay comfortable and healthy. (If he gets too hot, he risks coming down with a fever, which is a mandatory 48 hour stay in the hospital.)

Kim was humbled by the outpouring of support from the community. "It's overwhelming," she said. "I cannot even express my gratitude."
