Cubs keep growling: Tough loss won’t stop the team from having fun
Taking a knee, huddled up with their coach, the Cubs discussed their defeat, without a frown in sight.
On Monday, June 30 at 5:30 p.m. the Gateway Cubs faced the Fall Fairhaven Pharmacy on John W. Decas field. There are six teams in the American West division of the Babe Ruth Gateway league, including the Gateway Cubs.
The league brings boys from Carver, Middleborough, Lakeville, Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester, and Wareham together to have fun, said Cubs Coach TJ Croken.
“Gateway Babe Ruth helps them build everlasting friendships and relationships that they can carry on for the rest of their lives and be around America’s greatest pastime,” he said.
Cubs first baseman Aaron Davis, 14, says he likes both the group of kids, and how the league isn’t competitive, so he can have more fun.
“It’s definitely a different mix of kids compared to Amateur Athletic Union or any competitive baseball,” he said. “It’s something I can just show up and say ‘Oh my god, I know him’ type of thing.”
Cubs third baseman, pitcher, and left outfielder, TJ Pink, 14, is taking letting loose as a learning lesson this season.
“I learned to enjoy baseball better and have fun with it,” he said.
Cubs pitcher, Jack Walsh, 15, explained how he also loves the relaxed nature of the league as well as the group of boys he’s playing with.
“Oh, I love this team. It’s just good baseball. It’s not as competitive as high school…it doesn’t matter a lot, so you can go out there and have fun,” he said.
Despite the team’s loss, Walsh was still proud of a play he made late in the game, claiming it was his favorite play of the night.
“I stole second base in the bottom of the seventh,” he said.
