Daycare gets visit from dentists on-the-go

Children at the ABC Early Learning Center got a special visit on March 26... from mobile dentists.

Smile Massachusetts visited the daycare for a "Shine Your Smile Day." Smile Massachusetts aims to provide children access to quality preventative dental care. The dentist examined and counted the youngest students' teeth and provided an exam, cleanings, fluoride treatment, x-rays, and sealant for older children. Costs are absorbed by Medicaid, state, or private insurance, said Warren Harrison, chief operating officer of Smile Massachusetts.

"It was a wonderful thing," said Carol Coutour, executive director of the learning center.

The dentist and hygienist set up a chair and supplies and got to work.

"They were very accommodating," Coutour said. "It didn't disturb anything, it just fit right in."

Coutour said it was the first exposure to a dentist for many of the children. Eleven children participated.

"The moms loved it because it was very convenient for them," Coutour said.

The children were sent home with a toothbrush, a dental mirror, and a "report card" for parents.

The Smile Massachusetts mobile dentists will visit ABC Early Learning Center again in six months.
