Days worth of wet weather washes out Onset

Feb 2, 2011

While a one, two punch of winter weather blankets much of the state with snow, residents of Onset and Wareham are facing a different wet weather problem.

Flooded roadways are latest side effect of a wintery mix of snow, ice, and sleet brought on by the two day storm. Temperatures have climbed into the mid-to-upper 30s, leaving melting snow and rain to gather on town roads.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency has issued a number of safety tips to assist residents regarding the potential of flooding throughout the region. Avoid driving through flooded areas, the organizations cautions. If your car does becomes trapped in floodwaters, abandon it immediately and climb to higher ground.

To minimize damage from basement flooding, MEMA suggests elevating utilities and other materials that could be damaged by limited basement flooding. A coastal flood watch will remain in effect for eastern Massachusetts until Thursday morning. A rapidly intensifying nor’easter will pass southeast of Nantucket late Wednesday into early Thursday causing continued flooding and possible beach erosion Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service.
