Dennis Mendes, 61

Dennis M. Mendes, 61, of Taunton died Aug. 28 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence, Rhode Island.

Born in Wareham, he was the son of Elizabeth (DaSilva) and Manuel Mendes, Jr. of Canton. He graduated from Canton High School in 1975. Dennis was a salesman in the women’s shoe department at Saks Fifth Avenue department store in Copley Square for many years. He retired in 2012.

Dennis was a member of the New England Rose Society and was an avid gardener and rose grower. He loved to travel and going to the beach, tennis, golf, dancing and riding bicycles. Dennis also loved all the Boston sports teams and enjoyed photography and taking pictures of birds.

Known as “Dennis the Menace,” he was quick to make you laugh and enjoyed playing tricks on his friends and family.

He is survived by his daughter, Cristina Mendes of Boston; his parents, Elizabeth and Manuel Mendes, Jr. of Canton; his sisters, Lisa Sherman of Milford, and Lynne Mendes of Boston; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, the late Bruce A. Mendes.

His funeral will be from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Route 28), Wareham on Friday, Sept. 8 at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, High St., Wareham at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m.
