Department of Natural Resources officers practice ice rescues

Feb 14, 2022

Officers from the Department of Natural Resources completed an ice rescue and water survival training on Sunday, as part of a Wareham Fire Department program.

The department posted photos of the training to Facebook, showing officers suited up in dry suits on Tihonet Pond.

Officers practiced rescuing people from under the ice on the pond. The department said the town’s freshwater ponds often have hazards that can contribute to weak ice, like submerged trees, stumps and moving undercurrents.

The department advised that changes in temperature and weather conditions can affect what is considered “safe ice,” adding that no ice should ever be considered completely safe.
