Disagreements arise between candidates for the Board of Sewer Commissioners during Candidate's Night
Incumbent Board of Sewer Commissioners Chairwoman Marilyn Jordan and candidate Peter Dunlop disagreed over Article 19 during Candidate's Night.
Jordan was unable to comment on the article since she is one of the petitioners asking for more authority for the Board of Sewer Commissioners, but Dunlop expressed his solid stance against the proposition.
"As far as qualifications, my slogan is cooperation, not confrontation," Dunlop said in his introduction. "The Sewer Commissioners need to work as a team, and work with the Town Administrator."
"I will continue to be actively be seeking out all of the opportunities for grants from state, federal, and local agencies to lessen the burden on the rate payers," said Jordan while introducing herself.
Q: Could each candidate explain what they feel is the total overall role of sewer commissioners?
Dunlop: I see getting this whole thing together and working with Bourne, working with Marion, working with Mattapoisset, improving our plant so that we can... keep our rates down. That's what I see the role as a sewer commissioner.
Jordan: Well I disagree with one point, that we haven't been doing that. We have been doing that. Along with what you mentioned, we have to ensure that the money is well spent. To make the sewer department a district...has never been our intent nor do we want it. And we have developed a good relationship with Wareham Water District. Onset did not want to answer our letters but I'm sure they will once this gets rolling.
Q: What would be your vision of a master plan for the future of Wareham and how would you accomplish it?
Jordan: Well, we've already started a master plan... Our master plan is to economically and environmentally move Wareham forward.
Dunlop: I've seen getting the hybrid system in place as probably priority number one. And priority number two that the outfall pipe has to be addressed.
Q: Why should voters vote for you as Sewer Commissioner?
Jordan: As Chairman of the Board of Sewer Commissioners, I work quickly and diligently... Continued maintenance and upgraded projects will ensure our system runs as an optimum level, meeting all the state and federal requirements. We want stabilized funds, and to protect the sewer users and their money by continuing to be vigilant with the expansion.
Dunlop: So... I don't know how to answer that... What we're talking about is getting cooperation, not confrontation. My system of going to Derek and explaining my problem and he listened to me and he found time to find a solution. I didn't go over there demanding and fighting and he worked with me. It's that approach that's going to get everything done. It's that approach that's going to keep the rates down.
