Divers find the New Year's bubbly in chilled waters
While many champagne bottles were opened at 12 a.m. on Jan. 1, several more were being pulled out of the waters beside the Stonebridge Marina later in the day.
For the last 11 years, Buzzards Bay Diving Center has held a New Year’s Day Champagne Dive. At this year’s event, ten divers searched for submerged bottles of champagne and whatever other interesting treasures where there.
“This is one of the busier events,” said Lynne Besse of the Travel Scene. Besse was a spectator this year, but she has done the dive three times in the past.
“I’m a travel agent… I’m such the fair weather person,” Besse admitted.
The water was in the low 30s, and the air temperature was even colder.
Unlike the Polar Bear Plunge which took place earlier in the day just up the road at Onset Pier, divers did dress for the elements.
Most participants wore dry suits and the others wore thick wetsuits.
“I’ll switch over to a dry suit when I get old,” said diver Richard Walker.
Awards were given to divers who found the most bottles and most interesting items from the bottom of the channel.
Event organizer Steve Carey said the event goes back to well before the center was established, dating back to the early 1980s when the event was held through the Aquarius Diving Center which was located on Route 28.
