Don't poke the bear! Black bear spotted near Tihonet Road
Someone's having a bear-y good time in Wareham.
A black bear was spotted in the Tihonet Road area on the morning of Friday, July 10. The Wareham Department of Natural Resources posted a picture of the bear to its Facebook page Friday morning.
Director of Natural Resources Garry Buckminster said someone driving down Tihonet Road saw the bear walking along the tree line. Before the Wareham sighting, a black bear was recently seen traveling through Brockton and Middleboro. Buckminster said he believes Wareham's black bear could be the same one.
Black bears have been spotted in Wareham multiple times in recent summers. A bear was seen on Cromesset Road and in Onset in 2023. Another bear, nicknamed "Boo Boo" traveled through the South Coast in 2021, before being killed in a van crash on I-195.
"People keep their distance and let them do their bear things," Buckminster said. "We just let them keep moving."
The natural resources department recommended keeping pets away from the bear and to keep a distance from it if seen.
"Just let the bear do its thing and don't get involved with it," Buckminster said.
The department asked residents not to call 911 simply to report a bear sighting. Instead it recommends calling Wareham Animal Control at 508-291-3100 x 3183 or update them in the comments of the department's Facebook. Residents should not try to get close to the bear for photographs, should secure trash cans and take down bird feeders so bears aren't drawn to their properties.
