Doug the Quahog predicts summer full of sun

Jun 22, 2014

Everyone has heard of Punxstawny Phil, but what about Doug the Quahog?

Flanked by men in suits with rakes, swashbuckling pirates and his human handler, Johnny Quahog, Doug the Quahog predicted a season full of sunshine during the sixth annual Quahog Day ceremony at the Onset Pier Saturday.

"The only thing dark and stormy will be served at the bar," said Johnny Quahog, aka Erik Bevans, the co-owner of Quahog Republic restaurants in Falmouth and Onset.

The only person able to interpret what Doug has to say, Johnny Quahog, aka the Secretary General of the Quahog Republic, announced that Doug has predicted 93.6 days of sunshine for the Cape Cod summer.

"This is Doug's sunniest prognostication yet and we're thrilled," said Wendy Northcross, Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce CEO. "Today is the first day of what will be a tremendous Cape Cod summer."

Quahog Day conceived by the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce in 2009 after years of fielding calls from people asking what the weather would be like months ahead of their pending vacation.

Ever since, Doug has been delivering his predictions at different locations around the Cape, this time in Onset to Channel 7 news reporter Susan Tran who was the MC for the event and said, "Our weather guys are going to be mad, Doug has a better record than them."

After Doug's big prediction, kids or anyone else on the pier were able to take photos with Doug and his security team, or the Buzzards Bay Pirates, who provided Doug safe passage through Onset Bay.

So far Doug is spot on with his sunny summer prediction. Not bad for a Quahog.
