E. Alan Smiley, 87, of Wareham died May 13 in the Nemasket Healthcare Center, Middleboro. He was the husband of the late Maria J. (Resende) Smiley and the son of the late Edwin C. and Kathleen R. (Cort) Smiley.

He was born in Worcester and lived in Auburn and West Boylston before moving to Wareham 40 years ago. He graduated from Monson Academy.

Mr. Smiley began his career in the shoe manufacturing industry working at Frank H. Phieffer Company in Worcester, Marlboro Shoe Company, Queen City Shoe Company in Manchester, New Hampshire, Sandler Shoe Company in Needham, Lissak Shoe Company in New Bedford, Marks & Newman Shoe Company in New York and U.S. Shoe Company. He purchased Lissak Shoe Company in New Bedford and changed the name to Patriot Footwear. He retired in 1993. After retiring he worked at Walmart in Wareham.

Survivors include a son, Manuel S. Smiley of Wareham; a daughter, Rosa Smiley-Pires and her husband Dana L. Pires of Plymouth; two grandchildren, Sharae Sarno and Ivana Pires; a great grandson, Aiden Sarno. He was the brother of the late Richard Smiley.

His services will be private. Arrangements are by the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, and 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham.
