Eastern Bank "fills a void" for Wareham Boys & Girls Club

Eastern Bank stepped up to the donation plate Monday afternoon, when they presented a check for $10,000 to the Wareham Boys & Girls Club.

“The funding for this will support the programs and general operations for the club,” said Robert Mendes, executive director of the Greater New Bedford Boys & Girls Club. “This will go a long way in helping us continue to serve the youth in the greater Wareham and Onset area.”

Mendes said many children the club serves are “from low-income and disadvantaged situations,” and that the club is grateful for all the help it receives from the community.

“Any donation is a great one, but, when you can get a corporation like that -- I think it shows [Eastern Bank’s] investment in the community,” Mendes said. “The acceptance of this grant was a pleasant surprise to us.”

Wareham Boys & Girls Club Unit Director Kenny Fontes said the grant “will fill a void.”

“We’ve been fortunate to receive grants from the Yawkey Foundation, but this year those funds weren’t available, so Eastern Bank stepping up with this donation … has made a lot of people and a lot of families happy.”

Eastern Bank Vice President Rose Berry said the corporation is happy to support the club.

“The Boys & Girls Club does good work, and certainly deserves the support,” Berry said.
