Elizabeth Harrisson Ames, 92

Nov 19, 2012

Elizabeth Harrisson (Mackie) Ames passed away on Nov. 18 at the age of 92. She was the daughter of James H. and Georgia A. (Platt) Mackie, and the widow of Wareham Tree Warden and cranberry grower Edwin Ames.

Born in Boston, Betty spent many summers in Onset, where her parents operated the Wayside Inn. She attended both Boston and Wareham Public Schools, graduating from Watertown High School and from Banford Academy of Hairdressing.

For nearly fifty years, Betty worked tirelessly beside her husband, building their home and greenhouse business on Sandwich Road, their family cabin in New Hampshire, and later, their cranberry business. Seasonally, she worked for Irene’s House of Flowers and Melody Flower Shop.

In addition to serving as a scout and 4-H mother, she was a teacher and committee member at the East Wareham Methodist Church, and in her retirement, devoted her time to genealogy and volunteer work at the Wareham Free Library.

She is survived by her daughter, Lynda E. Ames of Mattapoisett, her son and daughter-in-law, William D. and Anne Marie Ames of Wareham. Betty was the grandmother of Kristin A. Staley, Ian M. Ames, and Michael F. Ames, and great-grandmother of Timothy, Quinn, and Addison Staley. She is also survived by many loving relatives and friends.

Memorial gifts in her memory may be made to the Mary Jane Pillsbury Memorial Scholarship Fund, PO Box 431, West Wareham 02576. Please also visit Betty’s online guestbook at warehamvillagefuneralhome.com. Her funeral services and burial in Agawam Cemetery will be private.
