Elks from across the South Coast paid tribute to veterans and their service at an hour long ceremony held at The Moving Wall on Aug. 20.

Led by members of the Wareham-New Bedford Lodge of Elks No. 73, the ceremony featured the placement of wreaths before the half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and brief histories of the war itself and the building of the Washington, D.C. monument.

In his remarks, Charles Anson, exalted ruler of the Wareham-New Bedford Lodge, honored those who served.

“The soldiers who fought and lost their lives while protecting freedom can never be repaid,” said Anson.

Speaking next, Ronald Teele, of the Middleboro Lodge of Elks No. 1274, explained the history of the monument.

Teele said he was struck by how more than 275,000 Americans, as well as corporations, foundations and veterans groups, donated $8.4 million to build the monument. No federal funds were used, he noted.

Ted Hatch, the chair of the Wareham-New Bedford Lodge’s Veterans Committee, said lodges make veteran causes a priority in his speech.

“So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent Order of Elks shall never forget them,” said Hatch.
